Today we’re featuring Sarah Hawkins & Myah Hollis, Founders of Pretty Thing. Pretty Thing is a creative studio + collective built by and for women. Pretty Thing also host events for women in creative + entrepreneurial fields around the country and work with female-driven brands to develop their brand's voice and aesthetic. I had the opportunity to ask Sarah & Myah 5 questions and here is what they had to say.
Q+A with MH Modern Muses Sarah Hawkins & Myah Hollis
Q: What was the defining moment that made you want to launch Pretty Thing?
A: We’d had tequila, which is how all great stories start, and we were in a bar talking about the types of stories that we wanted to tell and all of the ways that we could tell them. I think we were really frustrated with the narrative of what it is to be a woman. The types of things that are expected from us, both in the industry and in life in general. We knew that we weren’t the only ones who felt kind of strangled by that. We wanted to build a collective of women who weren’t afraid to say what they meant and stand behind it. Who were complex and sometimes “unlikable” but always unapologetically themselves. Those women have become our collaborators both in art and in business.
Q: How did you conquer fear when building your brand?
A: Doubt can definitely creep in at times but we’ve learned to embrace a pivot and to not be locked into a particular path to success. At the end of the day, the company and community come first, not our ego or our insecurities. Risk and doubt come hand in hand, but building a brand boils down to consistency and flexibility to adapt when things aren’t working.
Q: What advice would you have for a female entrepreneur ready to take the leap into entrepreneurship?
A: You are never going to feel ready, but when you do make that leap, surround yourself with people who will both encourage you and tell you the truth. People who see past where you are now to where you’re trying to go, and feel invested to help you get there. Who you have in your circle of influence matters. Protect it.
Q: What is your personal mantra?
A: Myah’s is “do what you love” and Sarah’s is “you can’t win if you don’t play.” As a company and as business partners, we tend to embrace risk and are usually on the same page about the cliffs we want to dive off of. When you operate that way, as long as your “why” is always at the center of every decision you make, you can’t really lose.
Q: What do you love most about Marie Hunter Beauty?
A: We love that Marie Hunter Beauty uses this unique platform to advance other women. As a business owner or creator, it can be easy to be singularly focused on what you’re building, but when you make the active decision to use that platform to lift up others in the process, we think that’s cool as hell.
